This distillery is situated on the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth, near the Royal Burgh of Tain in Ross-shire (one of the oldest towns in Scotland) on the site of a 1738 brewery. Founded in 1843 by the Mathesen brothers, no other distillery takes its wood management as seriously as this one. The distillery has even bought oak forests in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, in order to secure a high quality supply of casks. It also has the tallest necks of any stills in Scotland and obtains its water from Tarlogie Springs.
